About A2 Key

A2 Key, formerly known as Cambridge English: Key (KET), is a basic-level qualification that shows you can use English to communicate in simple situations. It’s the first step in your Cambridge English journey and proves you have a foundation in practical, everyday English.

Achieving A2 Key demonstrates that you can understand and use basic phrases, introduce yourself and others, and ask and answer questions about personal details such as where you live, people you know, and things you have.

A2 Key comes in two versions with identical format and difficulty, but different topics:

A2 Key: General topics suitable for adults and working professionals

Exam Format

Understanding the A2 Key structure

Reading & Writing

Duration: 1 hour Parts: 7 parts / 32 questions Reading (5 parts):
  • Multiple choice (signs, notices, messages)
  • Multiple choice (3 short texts)
  • Multiple choice (longer text)
  • Right/Wrong/Doesn’t say
  • Multiple choice cloze (vocabulary)
Writing (2 parts):
  • Gap filling (spelling and grammar)
  • Short message (25 words or more)

Tests ability to read and understand simple texts and write short messages

Listening

Duration: About 30 minutes (including 8 minutes to transfer answers)

Parts: 5 parts / 25 questions

Content:

  • Part 1: Multiple choice (5 short conversations)
  • Part 2: Gap fill (everyday announcements)
  • Part 3: Multiple choice (longer conversation)
  • Part 4: Gap fill (longer conversation or monologue)
  • Part 5: Multiple choice (longer conversation)
  • Topics: everyday situations, simple announcements, conversations

Speaking

Duration: 8-10 minutes

Format: Face-to-face with 2 candidates and 2 examiners

Parts:

  • Part 1: Interview (5-6 minutes)
    • Personal questions to each candidate
    • Basic information about yourself
  • Part 2: Discussion (3-4 minutes)
    • Candidates ask and answer questions
    • Use prompt card with information

Tests ability to communicate in basic spoken English

Digital & Paper-Based Options

Digital (Computer-based): 

Take Reading & Writing and Listening on a computer with faster results (typically 2 weeks). Type your Writing answers and complete tasks on screen.

Paper-based:

Traditional format with paper and pencil, results in about 4 weeks.

Both formats: 

Same difficulty, same recognition, same certificate. The Speaking test is always face-to-face with two examiners.

A2 Key is designed to be achievable and manageable for basic English users. The entire exam takes approximately 2 hours, making it an excellent first Cambridge qualification without being overwhelming.

Cambridge English Scale

A2 Key uses the Cambridge English Scale, which shows your exact level of achievement. Scores are reported for each skill (Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking) and overall.

Grade A 140-150 B1 Pass with Distinction
Grade B 133-139 A2 Pass with Merit
Grade C 120-132 A2 Pass
Level B2 100-119 A1 Not passed (no certificate)

Grade A (140-150):

Exceptional performance! You've demonstrated B1 level ability. Your certificate will show you achieved Level B1 (Cambridge English B1 Preliminary level).

Grade B (133-139):

Good performance at A2 level. You've clearly achieved the skills required for A2 Key with merit.

Grade C (120-132):

You've passed and achieved A2 level. Your certificate confirms your A2 proficiency.

Level A1 (100-119):

You demonstrated A1 level ability but didn't reach A2. Unfortunately, no certificate is issued, but you've made important progress. Consider preparing more before retaking the exam.
