About Young Learners Movers

Cambridge English: Movers, also known as Young Learners English (YLE) Movers, is the second of three Cambridge English Young Learners tests designed for children aged 8-11. It’s the perfect next step for children who have completed Starters or have similar English language skills.

Movers encourages children to communicate in more situations and builds on the foundation established at Starters level. Every child receives a certificate with shields showing their achievement—there is no pass or fail!

The Young Learners Journey

Cambridge English Young Learners consists of three progressive levels:

Starters (Pre-A1):

The beginning — introducing basic English

Movers (A1):

The middle step—expanding skills and confidence ⭐ You are here!

Flyers (A2):

The highest Young Learners level—preparing for adult Cambridge exams

Each level builds on the previous one, creating a clear, motivating learning path for children.

Understanding the Flyers test structure

Reading & Writing

Duration: 30 minutes

Parts: 6 parts / 40 questions

Content:

  • Part 1: Match definitions to words (5 questions)
  • Part 2: Read and complete sentences (6 questions)
  • Part 3: Read conversation and choose responses (6 questions)
  • Part 4: Read text and choose correct words (7 questions)
  • Part 5: Complete a story (7 questions)
  • Part 6: Write one-word answers to questions (9 questions)

Tests reading comprehension and basic writing with engaging stories and pictures

Listening

Duration: 30 minutes 

Parts: 5 parts / 25 questions

Content:

  • Part 1: Listen and draw lines between names and people (5 questions)
    Part 2: Listen and write a word or number (5 questions)
    Part 3: Listen and identify correct picture (5 questions)
    Part 4: Listen and tick boxes (5 questions)
    Part 5: Listen and color or draw (5 questions)

Speaking

Duration: 5-7 minutes

Format: One-on-one with a friendly examiner

    • Tell the story to examiner
  • Part 3: Respond to questions
    • Answer questions about four pictures

    • Questions about yourself and preferences

A friendly conversation using colorful pictures and familiar topics

Digital & Paper-Based Options

Paper-Based:

Traditional format using paper, pencils, and crayons. Children enjoy hands-on activities including coloring and drawing!

Digital (Computer-Based):

Interactive format on computer with engaging on-screen activities. Children use a mouse or keyboard to click, drag, type, and interact with colorful graphics.

Both formats:

Same difficulty, same content, same certificate. The Speaking test is always face-to-face with a trained examiner. Choose the format your child prefers.

Every Child Is a Winner!

There is no pass or fail for Young Learners Movers. Every child who takes the exam receives a certificate showing what they can do in English. This positive approach builds confidence and encourages continued learning.

How Results Are Shown

Children receive 1 to 5 shields for each skill (Reading & Writing, Listening, Speaking). The shields show how well they performed:
